Does Medicare Cover Vision And Dental

Medicare is the government health insurance plan for senior citizens, blind and disabled people.

It provides coverage for various healthcare services and supplies to the beneficiaries. Medicare plans can be classified into four parts namely Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D.Part A and Part B are covered under the Original Medicare program. The Original Medicare does not pay for all the healthcare costs. The coverage for dental or vision services are minimal. The Coverage exists for only those dental services that are an integral part of a covered procedure, under Part A or Part B if they are performed by Medicare approved dentist. The dental services may be required for covered procedures like restoration of the jaw subsequent to accidental injury, Extractions done in preparation for radiation treatment for neoplastic diseases involving the jaw and Oral examinations, but not treatment, preceding kidney transplantation or heart valve replacement. Similarly, vision benefits are provided for if the services are an integral part of a covered procedure.

Medicare Part C or Medical Advantage Plan includes the benefits of part A and B. Additionally, the beneficiaries of this plan gets additional coverage for dental and vision care. Beneficiaries are required to pay a monthly premium in addition to the Medicare Part B premium to cover services and supplies not covered by Original Medicare (Parts A and B), such as prescription drugs, dental care, vision care and gymnasium or health club memberships.

However, routine care like clinic visits, fillings, and glasses, are usually not covered. Medicare will cover the cost for a hospital stay in the case of a complicated dental procedure, but will not pay for the dental services. Medicare does not provide coverage for eyeglasses or contacts, but will cover intraocular lens cataract surgery.
