Common stereotypes of men based on psychological research are that they are dominant, achievement-oriented, active, ambitious, coarse, forceful, aggressive, self-confident, tough, rational, and unemotional.Gender stereotypes attribute traits such as aggressiveness and rationality to men. These set of traits can be deemed positive. The fact that men are stereotyped as dominant, achievement-oriented and ambitious, generally gives a perception that men can become great business leaders as compared to women, although there is very little research to support this. However, most CEO’s and top business leaders are men.
However, there are other common stereotypes of men like them being lazy, irresponsible, hasty, immature, terrible communicators, slow, dull, oblivious, and insensitive.
Traditionally, the male stereotypic role is to be the financial provider. He is also stereotyped to be assertive, competitive, independent, courageous, and career-focused, hold his emotions in check.
The report, "Boys to Men: Media Messages About Masculinity", identifies the most popular stereotypes of male characters as the Joker, the He-man type, the Strong Silent Type, the Big Shot and the Action Hero. The Joker stereotype is because men consider humor is associated with masculinity. The He-Man type is someone who is perceived to be strong and can fight villains to protect good people. The strong silent type is the one who is in charge, acts decisively, is silent and in control. The Big-shot type is the perceived to be the one defined by his professional status or the “economically powerful and socially successful” stereotype. Finally, there is the action-hero stereotype, where men are perceived to be strong and aggressive.
