Post Menopause And Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are caused due to the improper functioning of the ovaries in a woman’s body. Every month, the ovary produces an egg and also makes hormones like estrogen to support the life of the egg. When the ovary does not function normally, it may end up creating cysts.

The cysts can be found anywhere in the ovaries. Cysts can cause a lot of problems like delaying the periods, promoting male like qualities, leading to abnormal weight gain in the abdomen region and so on. When ovaries have cysts they cause a condition called polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

However, if PCOD occurs before conception in a woman, then it becomes very difficult for her to become pregnant. Ovarian cysts are more common before child birth and they are very rare after child birth. A woman who has had children seldom encounters such problems and if she is diagnosed with PCOS or PCOD, then other methods of treatment are followed.

As the ovaries become redundant after menopause, there could be a possibility of developing ovarian cysts. This is primarily because the ovaries cease functioning and do not produce eggs any more. However, modern science has made it possible for women to be treated for ovarian cysts.

Sometimes treatment may include a surgery to clear the fallopian tubes or it may result in the removal of ovaries. This syndrome is usually diagnosed using symptoms and a scan.

However, many experts believe that the uterus scans are not that effective in finding out post menopausal cysts. Ovarian cysts are strongly suspected to be malignant in nature in post menopausal women because the chances of occurrence are low.
