Hematologic Norms In The Elderly
There is a debate in the geriatric treating circles about the decline in hematologic norms in the elderly. There are some scientists and doctors who think that hematologic norms in the elderly decline with age while the others believe that the elderly actually get anemia with advancing age and this should not be seen as a reduction in the hematologic norms. |
Until now there has been no clear cut study giving the normal hematologic value in the elderly. This is because every study has had a group of elderly who have either had some chronic problem or they have had some disease that has affected the hematologic values in the members of the study group.
However, a recent research has indicated that the hematologic norms in the elderly do not change that much with advancing age. For example, the study showed that no elderly woman had hematologic value less than 12 g per dL while very few men had hematologic value less than 14 g per dL. Another study showed that even when men and women reach their 90s, the hematologic value does not decrease to such an extent to cause a problem.
But not scientists and doctors agree with the results of the recent research. The fact that many elderly who come from lower socioeconomic group invariably have anemia and this always plays a major role when checking for hematologic norms in the elderly. If such elderly people are part of the study group, the results will not always be accurate.
