One of the major treatment barriers for substance abuse in the elderly are the elderly themselves. They will refuse the treatment because they will not accept that they have a problem and thus they will not enter into treatment programs. And if by chance an elderly does enter a substance abuse treatment program, he or she will not be able to sustain it.
Besides this, there are many other treatment barriers for substance abuse in the elderly. Some of them are listed below.
- Most elderly people will not want to disclose to others that they have a problem. They feel like it is like talking about their home problems to outsiders, which for their generation is not the accepted norm.
- Elderly people are living on a pension which might not be sufficient for them to enroll in a treatment program for substance abuse.
- Many times the family itself is to be blamed. Most children try to avoid discussing their parents' problem with substance abuse. They either try to pretend that it does not exist or they indulge in helping the abuse by going out and purchasing the alcohol or medication that the parent is hooked onto.
- Very often it is seen that nursing homes refuse to accept that the elderly living there have a problem with substance abuse. They feel that it cannot happen in their nursing homes.
Besides those stated above, there are many other treatment barriers for substance abuse in the elderly.
