A person, who is color blind, may be able to see certain types of colors, but cannot distinguish between a few colors.Color blindness is also called color vision deficiency, and it can affect people in varying degrees. Some people may not be able to distinguish any color at all. However, being completely color blind is a rare disorder.
Color blindness is a common genetic defect. The defective X chromosome is carried, and mostly males are the victims of it. For example, if a man, who is color blind, has a daughter, then she will be the carrier of the defective gene, and may pass it on to her son. So, the son has 50 percent chances of getting the color blindness from his mother. However, when he has a son, that child will not be color blind. Most of the cases of color blindness are due to hereditary reasons. Sometimes, it happens due to age also. Some retinal and optic nerve diseases can cause color blindness.
Unfortunately, color blindness is not a condition that can be cured. However, it is possible to teach the people to identify colors based on the location like a traffic signal for example. A person who suffers from total color blindness may see everything in gray in color.
