Suicide In Elderly Asian Women

In the US, there seems to high rate of suicide in elderly Asian women. The rate of elderly women committing suicide is 8.1 in every 100,000. This statistics is according to the federal Center of Disease Control. So, why is the rate of suicide in elderly Asian women so high?

Scientists and behavioral experts believe that elderly Asian women are less likely to approach a healthcare professional for help if they are suffering from depression. This is because these women are from the old school of thought and in many Asian cultures conditions like depression are not spoken of outside the walls of the home.

In most Asian cultures and societies, the elders are looked upon as wise people who can help and guide the younger generation. However, with changing times, the younger Asian generation prefers to make their own decisions and do not turn to their senior relatives for help. This makes the elderly Asian women feel superfluous and useless in the family. They lose the purpose of their lives.

In addition, the elder Asian women are isolated if they do not live with extended family. They have no one to talk to, they do not speak English and they are depended on their family for everything, including the daily grocery shopping. In a country like the US, the elderly Asian women might not have the support making them reclusive and depressed. They begin to feel like a burden to their family and feel it is useless to continue living. Their entire social structure breaks down prompting many of the elderly Asian women to take a drastic step like committing suicide.
